"Best Thing I Never Had" is a midtempo pop and R&B ballad with influences of gospel music and is set in common time with a moderate tempo of 100 beats per minute. It is a four minutes and fourteen seconds long song. The song was written by Patrick Smith and co-written and produced by Kenneth Edmonds, Symbolyc One, Caleb McCambell, Atonio Dixon, Knowles and Shea Taylor. The single's cover artwork was photographed by German artist Ellen von Unwerth.
Critical response of several music critics was generally positive. It is presently impacting on charts worldwide.
